My original Idea for the project was just to create a weather resistant quarter pipe with just my three group members, but we found out that a group of seniors and sophomores were also making skate features so we decided to collaborate. This made it much easier to make large scale features ay our school such as a full half pipe. I initially thought that we weren't going to be able to get the funds or the materials for the ramp because we had no money in the first place. We decided to organize a skateboard competition to raise funds for our ramp. We had an amazing turn out for our competition and we raised enough funds so we could start construction of the ramp. We also received a large donation of materials from alpine lumber.
By definition sustainable design is the philosophy of designing physical objects, the built environment, and services to comply with the principles of social, economic, and ecological sustainability. I feel a portion of this definition fits my own personal description of sustainable design. I feel that sustainable design is when you can create something that can create usefulness and joy while not needing much attention or maintenance. I feel that the largest part if sustainable design is how it can benefit a group of people in multiple ways.
Through my empathy interviews I gained that majority of people at this school love being outside doing activities or hobbies that they enjoy. I fall into that same category. Prior to the interviews I knew that Animas had a very large skateboarding community and the talk of a mini ramp had been present in the past couple of months so when this project came along I decided to act on it.
I feel that the freedom didn’t constrain me and allowed me to look at big possibilities such as a mini ramp. The freedom also pushed me to have self motivation because I didn’t constantly have someone looking over my shoulder to make sure I was on task. I also feel that the lack of requirements during the build process created much less of a stress factor so I was able to focus on the building of my ramp much more than rather pleasing my teachers. I feel the concept of this freedom didn’t work very well for all the groups though. A few groups didn;t use the freedom wisely and decided to not do there work resulting in work time to be cut short.
During the project I feel that no had a specific task that they did I feel that all parts of the mini ramp were done as a group effort. There portions were different groups of people worked on different things but I feel that the work was spread out very evenly. I feel I had a large portion of the work when building the left side spine. ME and the freshman group constructed the skeleton very quickly and efficiently.

Reflective Questions
- During this project I had to work with a group of sometimes nine people and I usually struggle with that. During this project I had almost no problems with my group members, and we all collaborated very well together. I feel we were able to do this because we were all very invested and passionate about skating and completing the ramp.
- In the middle of project work time teachers decided to cut the last week. This hit my group very hard because we devoted our whole first week to organizing and we had only one week to build. Me and my group had trouble adapting to this change and me and the freshman group had to stop working a week prior to scheduled.
- In the very beginning it was very hard to get funds and materials for our ramp because the materials that are needed are very specific. We were able to make ties with Alpine Lumber and they donated nearly all needed materials for the ramp. We also organized a skate competition to raise funds for the ramp and that payed for the rest of the materials that were necessary to build the ramp.
- MY group wanted to get a weather proof skate material called Gator skin so the ramp could last for a long time. After research we found that Gator skin is over $300 and the company was not willing to donate them. We thought wwe would raise enough money to buy the gator skin but we ended up coming short. I would say that was our greatest failure.
- When we first started the project success was building any sort of skate feature at the school. I think collaborating with the other skate groups it made the outlook and expectation of success much higher than before. Now success is completing the mini ramp.
